How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be stubborn because oil can soak deep into fabric fibers and become harder to remove after washing and drying. The good news is that many grease stains can still be improved with the right approach.
Step 1: Check the Care Label
Before treating the stain:
- Check the garment’s washing instructions.
- Avoid harsh treatments on delicate fabrics such as silk, wool, or specialty materials.
Step 2: Apply a Grease-Fighting Dish Soap
Dish soap is designed to break down oils.
How to use it:
- Place a clean towel or cloth behind the stained area.
- Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the grease spot.
- Gently rub it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft brush.
- Let it sit for 10–30 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water if the fabric allows.
Step 3: Add Baking Soda for Extra Absorption
For older stains:
- Sprinkle baking soda over the dish soap.
- Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes.
- Brush off the residue.
- Wash the garment as usual.
Baking soda can help absorb some remaining oil, but it is not a grease remover by itself.
Step 4: Wash With the Warmest Safe Water
Wash according to the garment label.
Tips:
- Use a quality laundry detergent.
- Avoid overcrowding the washer.
- Check the stain before drying.
Step 5: Repeat if Needed
Some set-in stains require multiple treatments. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone, because heat can make remaining grease more difficult to remove.
For White or Colorfast Fabrics
An oxygen-based stain remover may help with stubborn stains. Follow the product instructions and test colored fabrics first
