HOW TO REMOVE SET-IN GREASE STAINS FROM LAUNDRY

Set-in grease stains can be difficult to remove, especially if the garment has already been through the dryer, but they’re often not permanent. The key is to break down the oil before washing again.

Method 1: Dish soap (best for most grease stains)

  1. Lay the garment flat.
  2. Apply a few drops of liquid dish soap directly to the stain.
  3. Gently rub it in with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
  4. Let it sit for 10–30 minutes.
  5. Rinse with warm water (if the fabric allows).
  6. Wash according to the care label using your regular detergent.
  7. Air-dry first to check if the stain is gone. Heat from a dryer can set any remaining stain.

Method 2: Baking soda (for older or heavy grease stains)

  1. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the stain.
  2. Let it sit for 30 minutes to several hours to absorb oil.
  3. Brush off the powder.
  4. Treat the stain with dish soap.
  5. Wash as usual.

Method 3: Enzyme-based laundry detergent

For food oils, butter, salad dressing, or cooking grease:

  • Apply a small amount of enzyme detergent directly to the stain.
  • Let it sit for 15–30 minutes before washing.

Helpful tips

  • Check the garment’s care label before using hot water.
  • Repeat the treatment if the stain remains—older stains often require multiple attempts.
  • Test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first, especially on delicate or colored fabrics.
  • Avoid chlorine bleach unless it’s safe for the fabric and color.

For delicate fabrics

Silk, wool, rayon, and other delicate materials may require gentler treatment or professional dry cleaning.

With patience and repeated treatment, many set-in grease stains can be significantly reduced or removed, even after they’ve been washed and dried.
