How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

Baking soda is often promoted online as a “natural” remedy for dark spots, wrinkles, and dark circles, but there is limited scientific evidence that it can improve these concerns. In fact, using baking soda directly on the face can cause problems because it is alkaline and can disrupt the skin’s natural pH, leading to dryness, irritation, redness, or worsening pigmentation—especially in sensitive skin.

If you still want to try it, be cautious:

  • Do not use it as a daily facial scrub.
  • Avoid applying it near the eyes.
  • Do a patch test on a small area first.
  • Stop if you notice burning, itching, or irritation.

More evidence-based approaches:

For dark spots:

  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) is one of the most important steps.
  • Ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, or retinoids may help reduce uneven pigmentation over time.

For wrinkles:

  • Retinoids (retinol/retinoid products) have the strongest evidence among topical ingredients for improving fine lines.
  • Moisturizers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides can improve skin hydration and appearance.

For dark circles:

  • They may be caused by genetics, thin skin, allergies, lack of sleep, dehydration, or pigmentation.
  • Treating the cause (sleep, allergy control, sun protection, and appropriate skincare) is usually more effective than home scrubs.

If you have persistent dark spots, sudden changes in pigmentation, or worsening under-eye darkness, a dermatologist can help identify the cause and recommend targeted treatment.
