If You Spot These Red Dots on Your Skin, Here’s What They May Mean
Small red dots on the skin are common, and in many cases they are harmless. However, the meaning depends on their size, appearance, location, how quickly they appeared, and whether you have other symptoms.
Common Causes of Red Dots on Skin
1. Cherry angiomas (very common)
These are small, bright-red or purple-red spots caused by tiny clusters of blood vessels near the skin’s surface.
Typical features:
- Round and smooth
- Usually 1–5 mm wide
- Common on the chest, arms, shoulders, and back
- More common with increasing age
- Usually harmless
They generally do not need treatment unless they bleed, change, or bother you cosmetically.
2. Petechiae (tiny blood spots)
Petechiae are very small red, purple, or brownish dots caused by tiny blood vessels leaking under the skin.
Possible causes include:
- Minor pressure or strain (such as heavy coughing or lifting)
- Certain medications
- Infections
- Blood clotting or platelet problems
Seek medical advice if they:
- Appear suddenly in large numbers
- Do not fade when pressed
- Come with fever, unusual bruising, bleeding, weakness, or feeling very unwell
3. Skin irritation or allergies
Red spots may appear after:
- New soaps, detergents, creams, or fabrics
- Insect bites
- Contact with irritants
These are often itchy or inflamed.
4. Inflammation or skin conditions
Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or other rashes can create red patches or spots.
A Simple Check
You can gently press a clear glass or finger against a red spot:
- If it fades (turns lighter) when pressed: it may be related to surface blood vessels.
- If it does not fade: it may be bleeding under the skin (such as petechiae), which may need more attention depending on the situation
