If you urinate frequently, it is a clear sign that… See more.

Frequent urination can be a sign of several different conditions—it does not automatically mean you have one particular disease.

One important possibility is diabetes, especially if frequent urination occurs along with excessive thirst, increased hunger, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or blurred vision. High blood glucose can cause the kidneys to pull more water into the urine.

Other common causes include:

  • Drinking large amounts of fluids or caffeine
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medications, especially diuretics
  • An enlarged prostate in men
  • Overactive bladder
  • Less commonly, kidney or other medical problems

If frequent urination is new, persistent, waking you repeatedly at night, or accompanied by pain/burning, blood in the urine, fever, extreme thirst, or unexplained weight loss, it’s worth getting evaluated rather than assuming it’s diabetes. A simple urine test and blood-glucose test can help identify the cause.
