If You’re Over 60, Eating a Banana a Day Causes… What?

A banana a day is generally safe and nutritious for most older adults. Age 60+ doesn’t make bananas dangerous.

🍌 What a Daily Banana Can Provide

  • Potassium — important for normal muscle, nerve, and heart function.
  • Fiber — supports healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.
  • Vitamin B6 and vitamin C — important nutrients for normal body function.
  • Carbohydrates — provide a convenient source of energy.

❤️ What About Blood Pressure?

Potassium-rich foods can help offset some of sodium’s effects on blood pressure. A banana can therefore be part of a heart-healthy diet, but one banana isn’t a treatment for high blood pressure.

⚠️ Who Should Be Careful?

People with chronic kidney disease or impaired kidney function may need to limit potassium. Some medications, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and potassium-sparing diuretics, can also increase potassium levels.

People with diabetes don’t necessarily need to avoid bananas, but portion size and the rest of the meal matter.
