Is Left-Side Sleeping the Secret to Better Health?…

Is Left-Side Sleeping Really a Secret to Better Health?

Sometimes—but it isn’t a universal health rule. For most healthy adults, the best sleeping position is the one that lets you sleep comfortably and breathe well. Side sleeping in general can be beneficial for people who snore or have obstructive sleep apnea because it can help keep the airway more open.

Pregnancy: Later in pregnancy, side sleeping is recommended rather than spending long periods flat on the back. Importantly, you don’t have to stay exclusively on your left side—ACOG says either side is fine.

What about the heart and digestion?

You’ll often see claims that sleeping on the left side dramatically improves circulation, “detoxes” the body, or boosts digestion. Those claims go well beyond the evidence. There isn’t a reason for everyone to force themselves to sleep on their left side.

If you have nighttime heartburn, however, it’s a simple position change worth trying. If you have sleep apnea, persistent snoring, or significant nighttime breathing problems, changing sleep position shouldn’t substitute for medical evaluation.

Bottom line: Left-side sleeping can be useful for reflux and during pregnancy, while side sleeping generally may help some people with snoring or sleep apnea. But there’s no magic sleeping side that guarantees better health for everyone.
