Visible Signs That May Point to Liver Disease
The important caveat is that liver disease can be silent for years. Visible changes can provide clues, but none of these signs by itself proves that your liver is diseased. Diagnosis usually requires a medical history, examination, blood tests, and sometimes imaging.

Some signs worth paying attention to include:
Yellow skin or yellowing of the whites of the eyes (jaundice) — caused by increased bilirubin.
Spider-like red blood vessels on the skin — sometimes called spider angiomas.
Red or blotchy palms — palmar erythema can occur with cirrhosis.
An unusually swollen abdomen — fluid accumulation (ascites) can occur when liver disease becomes advanced.
Swollen ankles, legs, or feet — can result from fluid retention.
Easy bruising or bleeding — advanced liver disease can interfere with normal blood clotting.
Very itchy skin — particularly with certain liver and bile-duct disorders.
Dark urine — can occur with worsening liver dysfunction or problems with bile flow.
Muscle loss and weakness — can accompany advanced cirrhosis.
Changes in the nails or fingers — some people with cirrhosis develop white nails or clubbing.

Don’t wait for visible symptoms
Fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and other liver conditions can cause few or no symptoms in their early stages. Feeling perfectly well doesn’t necessarily mean the liver is healthy.

If you notice new jaundice, significant abdominal swelling, unexplained weight loss, persistent itching, or easy bleeding, arrange a medical evaluation.
Seek emergency care if you have known liver disease and develop vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, or sudden confusion/slurred speech, as these can indicate serious complications.

Bottom line: Your skin, eyes, abdomen, and nails can sometimes offer clues, but blood tests and appropriate medical evaluation—not appearance alone—are needed to determine whether liver disease is present.
