Leg Cramps at Night: Causes, Prevention & Treatment

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful tightening of a muscle—often in the calf, foot, or thigh—that can wake you from sleep. They are common, especially as people get older, but frequent cramps may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Common Causes of Nighttime Leg Cramps

1. Muscle fatigue or overuse

Strenuous activity, long periods of standing, or unusual exercise can make muscles more likely to cramp.

2. Dehydration

Not getting enough fluids may contribute to muscle discomfort, especially with:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Hot weather
  • Intense exercise

3. Mineral or electrolyte changes

Muscles rely on minerals such as:

  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium

Low levels can sometimes contribute to cramping, although most nighttime cramps are not caused by a simple deficiency.

4. Aging-related muscle changes

As people age, changes in muscles, nerves, and circulation may increase the likelihood of cramps.

5. Long periods of sitting or standing

Staying in one position for a long time may contribute to muscle stiffness and discomfort.

6. Certain medications

Some medicines may increase the chance of cramps in some people, including certain:

  • Diuretics (“water pills”)
  • Cholesterol-lowering medications
  • Some blood pressure medicines

Do not stop a prescribed medication without medical advice.

7. Nerve or circulation-related conditions

Less commonly, cramps may be associated with:

  • Nerve compression
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Other medical conditions
