If you’re looking for natural homemade weed control, a few options can work, but they differ in safety and effectiveness:
- Boiling water: Pour carefully over weeds growing in cracks, paths, or other areas where you don’t want vegetation. It kills the contacted plants but doesn’t prevent new weeds.
- Hand pulling + mulch: The safest approach for garden beds. Remove the whole root where possible, then add 5–8 cm (2–3 in) of mulch to suppress regrowth.
- Vinegar: Household vinegar can damage young weeds when sprayed directly on their leaves, but it can also damage desirable plants and soil organisms. Stronger horticultural vinegar is much more hazardous to handle.
- Salt: Although it kills plants, avoid using salt in garden soil because it can accumulate and make the soil unsuitable for future plant growth.
- Dish soap: Sometimes added to vinegar solutions to help them spread over leaves, but it isn’t itself a reliable weed killer.
Best natural combination: pull or cut the weeds, then mulch the area heavily. For weeds in driveway or pavement cracks, boiling water is a simple chemical-free option.
