New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination. (1/2)

That headline is partly true but potentially misleading. Researchers have developed and are continuing to improve less invasive alternatives for some people, but traditional colonoscopy has not been replaced.

Some newer or less invasive options include:

  • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT): A stool test that looks for hidden blood. It’s convenient and done at home, but if it’s positive, a colonoscopy is usually needed.
  • Multitarget stool DNA test: Combines a FIT with DNA markers associated with colorectal cancer. A positive result still requires a colonoscopy.
  • CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy): Uses CT imaging to examine the colon. It is less invasive than a standard colonoscopy but still requires bowel preparation, and any suspicious findings generally need to be confirmed and treated with a traditional colonoscopy.
  • Colon capsule endoscopy: A swallowable camera capsule can image the colon in selected patients. It is available in some settings but is not yet a replacement for colonoscopy in most people.

Why standard colonoscopy is still important

A Colonoscopy remains the gold standard because it allows a doctor to:

  • Directly inspect the entire colon.
  • Remove precancerous polyps during the same procedure.
  • Take tissue samples (biopsies) if needed.

The ability to diagnose and treat during one procedure is something the noninvasive tests cannot fully replace.

Bottom line: Less invasive screening methods are becoming more available and are excellent options for many people, but they have not made colonoscopy obsolete. If a screening test finds something abnormal, a standard colonoscopy is usually still the next step.
