🩺 “New Method: Colonoscopy Will No Longer Be an Invasive Examination” — What’s Actually True?
There are less-invasive alternatives to conventional colonoscopy, but colonoscopy has not been replaced. As of 2026, it remains an important—and highly effective—method of colorectal cancer screening.
🔎 One major alternative: CT colonography
CT colonography, sometimes called a virtual colonoscopy, uses a CT scanner to create detailed images of the colon rather than inserting a long flexible camera through the entire colon. It is much less invasive than conventional colonoscopy.
However, it isn’t completely non-invasive:
- The bowel still generally needs to be cleansed beforehand.
- A small tube is inserted into the rectum and the colon is inflated with air or gas.
- It involves a small amount of radiation.
- If a significant polyp is discovered, you’ll generally still need a traditional colonoscopy to remove it or take a biopsy.
🧪 There are also stool and blood tests
Current colorectal-cancer screening options include FIT stool testing, stool DNA/RNA tests, CT colonography, and colonoscopy. In 2026, the American Cancer Society added guidance for blood-based screening, although it considers blood tests less sensitive than preferred stool or visual screening options. A positive non-colonoscopy test still requires follow-up colonoscopy
