🍉 No More Bland Watermelons: How to Pick a Sweeter One
There isn’t a sure-fire visual test that guarantees sweetness, because variety and growing conditions matter. But a few clues can significantly improve your chances.
1. 🟡 Check the field spot first
Turn the watermelon over and look for the patch where it rested on the ground. A large creamy-yellow to yellow-orange spot is a good sign of maturity. A white or very pale spot can indicate that it was harvested too early.
2. ⚖️ Choose the heavier one
Compare similarly sized melons and pick the one that feels heavier for its size. Watermelon is about 92% water, so this is a useful clue for juiciness.
3. 🌿 Look at the stem if it’s still attached
A dry, brown stem or tendril is consistent with a mature melon; a green one can suggest it was picked earlier. This clue is more useful with melons picked directly from the vine than with supermarket fruit.
4. 🟢 Look for a dull rind
A mature watermelon generally has a dull rather than glossy exterior.
5. 👊 Don’t obsess over the “knock test”
You can tap the melon, but experts don’t agree that sound is a highly reliable indicator. Other factors—especially the field spot and weight—are more useful.
🍉 The quick market test
Flip it → look for a creamy-yellow field spot → compare its weight → choose the dull, undamaged melon.
And don’t worry if the watermelon doesn’t have a perfect shape or uniform stripes—no single visual characteristic guarantees sweetness
