Pinworms in children are a very common intestinal infection caused by a small parasitic worm called Enterobiasis (pinworm infection), also known as threadworms.
🪱 What they are
- Tiny white worms that live in the large intestine
- Very common in school-age children
- Spread easily from person to person
🌙 Why they cause nighttime itching
Nighttime itching around the anus is the classic symptom because:
- At night, female pinworms move out of the intestine to lay eggs on the skin around the anus
- This causes intense itching
- Scratching transfers eggs to fingers, bedding, and objects, spreading infection
⚠️ Common symptoms in children
- Itching around the anus (worse at night)
- Restless sleep or waking up frequently
- Irritability or tiredness during the day
- Sometimes mild stomach discomfort
- Occasionally visible tiny white worms in stool or around the anus
🧼 How it spreads
Pinworm eggs are very sticky and spread easily through:
- Scratching and touching the mouth
- Contaminated bedding, clothes, or towels
- Shared toys or surfaces
- Poor hand hygiene
💊 Treatment
Pinworm infections are easy to treat:
- Prescription or over-the-counter anti-parasitic medication (doctor-guided)
- All household members are often treated at the same time
- A second dose is usually needed after 2 weeks to prevent reinfection
🧽 Prevention
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap
- Keep nails short and clean
- Wash bedding and clothes in hot water
- Daily morning bathing helps remove eggs
- Avoid scratching the area
🩺 When to see a doctor
- Persistent itching despite treatment
- Recurrent infections in the household
- Severe sleep disturbance or abdominal symptoms
Pinworms are uncomfortable but not dangerous, and with proper treatment and hygiene, they clear quickly.
