Scratches on glasses: don’t waste money: apply a little and they’ll disappear instantly.

That claim is misleading. Scratches on glasses don’t “disappear instantly” with any simple home trick. Most glasses are made with hard coatings (anti-reflective or scratch-resistant layers). Once those are scratched, the damage is physical, not something you can dissolve or erase.

Why that viral trick is fake

Common “apply a little” hacks usually suggest things like:

  • Toothpaste
  • Baking soda
  • Oil or wax

These don’t remove scratches—they may:

  • Temporarily fill shallow marks (making them less visible for a short time)
  • Make lenses cloudy or worse over time
  • Damage protective coatings

What actually works

1. Very minor surface marks (temporary improvement only)

  • Lens polish kits (optician-grade)
  • Anti-reflective-safe cleaners

They may reduce visibility but won’t truly remove scratches.

2. Deep scratches

  • Cannot be repaired at home
  • Best solution is lens replacement

3. If glasses are expensive

  • Check with your optician—sometimes lenses can be replaced without changing frames
  • Warranty or coating protection may apply

What NOT to do

  • Toothpaste or baking soda scrubbing ❌ (can worsen coatings)
  • Glass polish meant for windows ❌
  • Abrasive rubbing ❌

Bottom line

If scratches are visible, there is no instant fix that truly removes them. Viral hacks usually only mask the problem briefly or damage lenses further.

If you want, tell me what type of glasses you have (plastic, anti-glare, sunglasses), and I can suggest the safest way to reduce the visibility or prevent new scratches.
