Here’s a simple old-fashioned trick for cleaning an oven

Cleaning an oven does not always require strong chemical cleaners. A traditional method using baking soda, water, and a little time can help loosen grease and baked-on residue.

What You’ll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A small bowl
  • A sponge or cloth
  • A spray bottle with white vinegar (optional)

Step-by-Step Method

1. Remove Loose Debris

Take out the oven racks and wipe away crumbs and loose food particles.

2. Make a Baking Soda Paste

Mix:

  • About ½ cup baking soda
  • A few tablespoons of water

Adjust until you have a spreadable paste.

3. Apply the Paste

Spread the mixture over the inside surfaces of the oven, focusing on:

  • Greasy areas
  • Burned-on food spots
  • The oven floor

Avoid covering:

  • Heating elements
  • Gas openings
  • Electrical parts

4. Let It Sit Overnight

Leave the paste for several hours or overnight. This gives the baking soda time to soften grease and grime.

5. Wipe Away the Residue

Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove the loosened dirt. Stubborn areas may need gentle scrubbing.

6. Use Vinegar for Extra Help (Optional)

A light spray of white vinegar can help dissolve remaining baking soda residue and make wiping easier.

Never mix vinegar with commercial oven cleaners or other chemicals.

Cleaning Oven Racks

For racks:

  • Soak them in warm water with dish soap.
  • Scrub with a non-scratch sponge.
  • Dry thoroughly before replacing
