The idea that there is one “best vitamin” that fixes heavy calves or dead-feeling feet is misleading. Leg symptoms can have many causes, and the right treatment depends on what is causing them.
However, certain vitamin deficiencies can contribute to leg weakness, numbness, tingling, or fatigue:
1. Vitamin B12 — important for nerve health
Low B12 levels can affect the nerves and may cause:
- Tingling or “pins and needles” in the feet
- Numbness
- Burning sensations
- Balance problems
- Weakness
People at higher risk include some older adults and those with conditions or medications that reduce B12 absorption.
2. Vitamin D — supports muscles and bones
Low vitamin D may be associated with:
- Muscle weakness
- Aching muscles
- Difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from a chair
3. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) — supports nerve function
Severe deficiency can affect nerves and may contribute to:
- Weakness
- Numbness
- Tingling
4. Magnesium — a mineral involved in muscle function
Low magnesium can sometimes be associated with:
- Muscle cramps
- Twitching
- Muscle discomfort
“Heavy calves” may have other causes
Leg heaviness can also come from:
- Poor circulation
- Varicose veins
- Nerve compression (such as from the lower back)
- Medication effects
- Lack of activity
- Muscle strain
When to get checked
Seek medical advice if you have:
- Sudden leg weakness or numbness
- One leg that is swollen, painful, warm, or red
- Trouble walking
- Loss of bladder or bowel control with leg weakness
- Persistent or worsening symptoms
