This is a common clickbait headline. No homemade weed killer can reliably kill weeds in one day and ensure they never return. Many weeds regrow from their roots or from seeds already in the soil.
What actually works
💧 Boiling water
- Effective for weeds growing in cracks in driveways, sidewalks, or patios.
- It kills the above-ground parts and may kill shallow-rooted weeds.
- Avoid using it near plants you want to keep.
🌿 Hand-pulling
- Best done after rain or watering, when the soil is soft.
- Remove as much of the root as possible to reduce regrowth.
🌾 Mulch
- A 2–4 inch (5–10 cm) layer of mulch helps block sunlight and suppress new weeds in garden beds.
🧪 Herbicides
For persistent or invasive weeds, a herbicide labeled for the specific weed can be effective when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Repeated treatment may still be necessary.
What about homemade vinegar mixtures?
Many online recipes combine:
- White vinegar
- Salt
- Dish soap
These can burn the leaves of young weeds, but they have important limitations:
- Vinegar mainly damages the parts of the plant above ground and often doesn’t kill deep roots.
- Salt can make soil unsuitable for future plants and should generally not be used in garden beds.
- Dish soap helps the liquid stick to leaves but isn’t a weed killer by itself.
Preventing weeds from coming back
- Pull weeds before they produce seeds.
- Use mulch in flower and vegetable beds.
- Repair cracks in paved areas where weeds repeatedly sprout.
