The claim “Throw it down the sink and the drain will never clog again!” is a common viral cleaning tip, but there is no ingredient you can pour down a drain that guarantees it will never clog again.
A few things that are often suggested online:
- Baking soda and vinegar:
- Can help loosen odors and some light buildup, but it is not a permanent clog prevention method.
- It usually does not remove tough grease or hardened debris.
- Boiling water:
- May help dissolve some soft grease buildup in certain pipes, but it is not suitable for all plumbing systems (especially some plastic pipes).
- Salt or harsh DIY mixtures:
- These are often advertised as “miracle” solutions, but they do not reliably prevent clogs and may not be appropriate for every plumbing setup.
Better ways to prevent clogged drains:
- Use a sink strainer to catch food particles and hair.
- Avoid pouring grease, oil, and fat down the drain.
- Run plenty of water after using the sink.
- Clean the drain stopper regularly.
- Flush kitchen drains occasionally with hot water and mild dish soap to reduce grease buildup.
If a drain is already slow, the best solution depends on the cause—food debris, grease, hair, mineral buildup, or a deeper pipe blockage.
