👄 Waking Up With a Dry Mouth? Here’s What Your Body Might Be Telling You
An occasional dry mouth in the morning is common. But if you wake up with a dry or sticky mouth most days, it’s worth looking for the cause.
1. 😴 You may be breathing through your mouth
Sleeping with your mouth open can dry out the tissues overnight. Nasal congestion and snoring can make this more likely.
2. 💊 Your medication could be contributing
Hundreds of medications can reduce saliva production, including some medicines for high blood pressure, depression, and bladder problems. Don’t stop a prescribed medication without speaking with your doctor.
3. 💧 You may be dehydrated
Not getting enough fluid can contribute to dry mouth. Older adults are particularly susceptible to dehydration.
4. 🩸 It can occur with diabetes
Diabetes can cause dry mouth, particularly when blood glucose isn’t well controlled. However, dry mouth alone doesn’t mean you have diabetes.
5. 🩺 An underlying condition may be involved
Persistent dry mouth can occur with conditions such as Sjögren’s disease, among others. If it continues, a doctor or dentist can help determine the cause
