What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

There is no different “normal” blood pressure for each age in adults. Current medical guidelines generally use the same healthy target regardless of age, although treatment goals may be individualized based on overall health.

Age Healthy Blood Pressure
Children Depends on age, sex, and height (uses pediatric charts)
Teenagers (13–17 years) Less than 120/80 mmHg
Adults (18 years and older) Less than 120/80 mmHg
Older adults (65+ years) Less than 120/80 mmHg is considered healthy, though treatment targets may vary based on an individual’s health and medical conditions

Blood pressure categories for adults

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic
  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 systolic or 80–89 diastolic
  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140/90 mmHg or higher
  • Hypertensive crisis: 180/120 mmHg or higher—seek immediate medical care, especially if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, shortness of breath, vision changes, or weakness.

Tips for getting an accurate reading

  • Rest quietly for 5 minutes before measuring.
  • Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
  • Keep your arm supported at heart level.
  • Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise for at least 30 minutes before the measurement.
  • Take two readings, 1–2 minutes apart, and average them.

If you tell me your age and your blood pressure reading (for example, 128/82 mmHg), I can help explain what that result means.
