What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

A common misconception is that there is a different “normal” blood pressure for every age. Current medical guidelines do not define separate normal blood pressure ranges for healthy adults based on age.

Here’s a general guide:

Age Healthy blood pressure (typical target)
18–39 years Less than 120/80 mmHg
40–59 years Less than 120/80 mmHg
60 years and older Less than 120/80 mmHg (though treatment goals may be individualized)

Blood pressure categories for adults

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: Systolic 120–129 mmHg and diastolic less than 80 mmHg
  • High blood pressure (hypertension), Stage 1: Systolic 130–139 mmHg or diastolic 80–89 mmHg
  • High blood pressure (hypertension), Stage 2: Systolic 140 mmHg or higher or diastolic 90 mmHg or higher
  • Hypertensive crisis: 180/120 mmHg or higher. If confirmed, this requires immediate medical evaluation, especially if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, shortness of breath, confusion, or vision changes.

What about older adults?

Blood pressure often rises with age because arteries become stiffer. However, this doesn’t mean higher readings are considered “normal” or ideal. Instead, healthcare providers may tailor treatment goals for older adults based on factors such as:

  • Overall health
  • Frailty
  • Risk of falls
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Other medical conditions

Measuring blood pressure accurately

For the most reliable reading:

  • Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes beforehand.
  • Keep your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
  • Rest your arm at heart level.
  • Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise for about 30 minutes before measuring.
  • Take two readings about 1 minute apart and record both.

A single high reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have hypertension. Diagnosis is usually based on multiple readings taken on different days or with home or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

If you tell me your age and your recent blood pressure readings, I can help you understand what they mean in context.
