What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

There is not a different “normal” blood pressure for every age in healthy adults. Most modern medical guidelines use the same general categories regardless of age.

Blood pressure categories for adults (18 years and older)

Category Systolic (top number) Diastolic (bottom number)
Normal Less than 120 Less than 80
Elevated 120–129 Less than 80
High blood pressure (Stage 1) 130–139 or 80–89
High blood pressure (Stage 2) 140 or higher or 90 or higher
Hypertensive crisis* 180 or higher and/or 120 or higher

*A hypertensive crisis requires immediate medical assessment, especially if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, or vision changes.

What about age?

As people get older, blood pressure often increases, but that doesn’t mean higher blood pressure is considered “normal” or healthy. In general:

  • Children: Normal values vary by age, sex, and height.
  • Adults (18–64): A healthy target is generally below 120/80 mmHg.
  • Older adults (65+): Treatment goals may be individualized based on overall health, but healthcare providers still aim to keep blood pressure well controlled.

The best blood pressure target for you can depend on factors such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, or other medical conditions. If you tell me your age and a recent blood pressure reading, I can help explain what it means.
