Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The headline is too dramatic. There is no rule that people over 65 should stop showering every day. However, aging skin becomes thinner, produces less natural oil, and loses water more easily, so long, hot, or heavily soaped daily showers can worsen dryness and irritation.

What can happen?
Dry, itchy skin: Hot water and excessive soap remove some of the skin’s protective oils.

Falls: Bathrooms are a major place for slips and falls. Older adults with balance problems should consider nonslip surfaces, grab bars, or a shower chair.

A better shower routine

You don’t necessarily need to shower less often, but change how you shower:

Use warm/lukewarm rather than hot water.
Keep showers around 5–10 minutes.
Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, concentrating on areas that actually need washing rather than aggressively soaping the entire body.

Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it.
Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while the skin is still slightly damp, ideally within a few minutes of showering.

For someone who doesn’t sweat much or get dirty, a full shower doesn’t necessarily have to happen every day. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically notes that some people in their 60s and 70s may not need daily bathing.

Bottom line: The problem isn’t “showering after 65.” It’s overly hot, long, or harsh showers on aging skin. A short, lukewarm shower with gentle cleansing and regular moisturizing is generally much kinder to the skin.
