Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

The idea that it’s “important not to flush after every time you urinate” is misleading. There is no medical recommendation that says you should avoid flushing after urinating. Whether to flush every time is mainly a question of water conservation versus hygiene and convenience.

Why some people choose not to flush every time

  • To save water. Older toilets can use several gallons (liters) of water per flush, while newer high-efficiency toilets use much less. Skipping some flushes can reduce household water use.
  • During droughts or water shortages. Some communities encourage conserving water when supplies are limited.

Reasons to flush after urinating

  • Reduces odors. Urine left in the toilet can develop a noticeable smell, especially after several hours.
  • Keeps the toilet cleaner. Standing urine can contribute to stains and mineral deposits.
  • Improves hygiene. Fresh urine from a healthy person is generally low in bacteria, but bacteria can multiply in standing urine over time.

A few practical tips

  • If you choose to delay flushing to save water, clean the toilet regularly.
  • If possible, close the toilet lid before flushing. This may reduce the spread of tiny droplets (“toilet plume”) into the surrounding area.
  • In shared bathrooms, flushing after each use is usually the more considerate and hygienic option
