The main reason people recommend not flushing after every urination is to save water. A standard toilet flush uses anywhere from about 3 to 13 liters (0.8 to 3.5 gallons) of water, depending on the toilet’s age and design. If everyone skipped some flushes, it could save thousands of liters of water per household each year.
This is the idea behind the saying:
“If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.”
However, it’s not always the best practice. There are trade-offs:
- Water conservation: Flushing less reduces water use, which is especially important during droughts or in areas with limited water supplies.
- Odor: Urine left in the bowl can produce unpleasant smells, especially in warm bathrooms.
- Staining: Minerals in urine can cause yellow or brown stains and limescale buildup over time.
- Hygiene: Fresh urine from a healthy person is generally low-risk from an infectious disease standpoint, but standing urine can allow bacteria to multiply and contribute to odors. In households with someone who has a urinary tract infection or certain illnesses, flushing each time may be preferable.
- Shared bathrooms: In a busy household or public setting, flushing after each use is usually more considerate and hygienic.
If your goal is to save water without leaving urine in the bowl, another option is to:
- Install a high-efficiency toilet, which uses much less water per flush.
- Use the half-flush on a dual-flush toilet for liquid waste.
So, it’s not inherently important to avoid flushing after every urination. It’s a conservation strategy that makes sense in some situations—particularly where water is scarce—but in areas with abundant water or where odors and cleanliness are a concern, flushing after each use is perfectly reasonable.
