If your creatinine is high, these 5 immediate steps can help fix it

If your creatinine is high, there is no guaranteed “quick fix” that lowers it immediately. Creatinine can rise for many reasons, including dehydration, intense exercise, certain medicines, muscle injury, kidney problems, or urinary blockage. The right step depends on the cause.

Five steps that may help support kidney health and address reversible causes:

  1. Drink enough fluids (if you are not on fluid restriction)
    • Dehydration can raise creatinine temporarily. Avoid forcing excessive water if you have heart or kidney failure unless your clinician advises it.
  2. Avoid kidney-stressing substances
    • Avoid unnecessary use of NSAID painkillers (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) and avoid unapproved supplements, especially high-dose creatine or bodybuilding products.
  3. Review medications with a healthcare professional
    • Some medicines can affect creatinine levels. Do not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice.
  4. Reduce very intense exercise temporarily
    • Heavy workouts can increase creatinine because of muscle breakdown.
  5. Check the cause with proper testing
    • A clinician may look at repeat creatinine, eGFR, urine tests, blood pressure, and other factors to determine whether kidney function is affected.

Seek medical advice promptly if high creatinine is accompanied by reduced urine output, swelling, shortness of breath, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, or vomiting.

If you share your creatinine value, age, sex, and whether it was measured in mg/dL or µmol/L, I can help you understand what it may indicate.
