The idea of leaving a glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation is a viral home “trick,” but it is often presented without context. It is not a proven safety method, though there are a few reasons people recommend variations of it.
Why do people do this?
1. To notice possible water problems
Some people place a dry paper towel or sheet of paper in the sink before leaving. If they return and it is wet, they may suspect:
- A dripping faucet
- A leak
- Water backup
- Someone using the sink
However, it only gives a clue after the fact—it does not prevent damage.
2. To deter small pests (sometimes suggested)
A few viral posts claim a glass or object in the sink can discourage insects or rodents, but there is little evidence that this works.
More useful things to do before vacation
✅ Turn off the main water supply if you’ll be away for an extended period (especially if no one will check your home).
✅ Check faucets, pipes under sinks, and appliances for leaks.
✅ Clean out food scraps and rinse the sink to reduce odors and pests.
✅ Run or clean drains if needed.
✅ Ask a trusted person to check your home during a long trip.
✅ Set your water heater, thermostat, and security systems appropriately.
A glass and paper in the sink may serve as a simple “did something happen?” indicator, but it is not a replacement for proper home preparation before leaving.
