“Very Dirty Mop? Just Add One Ingredient and It Will Be Like New” — Does It Work?
This is a common clickbait claim. There isn’t a single ingredient that can make every old or dirty mop “like new,” but the right cleaning method can remove dirt, odors, and bacteria from many reusable mop heads.
For most cotton or microfiber mop heads
- Shake or rinse off loose dirt.
- Wash the mop head with warm water and laundry detergent.
- If the manufacturer’s instructions allow it, soak it for 15–30 minutes in a solution of:
- White vinegar and warm water (to help remove odors and mineral buildup), or
- A laundry sanitizer or disinfectant suitable for the mop material.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Allow it to air-dry completely before using it again.
If using bleach
Bleach can disinfect some mop heads, but:
- Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
- Dilute it according to the product label.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other household cleaners, as this can produce dangerous gases.
When to replace the mop
A mop should be replaced if it:
- Has torn or frayed fibers
- No longer cleans effectively
- Has a persistent odor even after washing
- Shows signs of mold that cannot be removed
