How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows So They Look Fresh and Smell Clean 🛏️✨

Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. Many pillows can be washed, but always check the care label first.

Step 1: Check the pillow type

Usually washable:

  • Polyester-filled pillows
  • Many down and feather pillows (check the label)

⚠️ Usually not machine washable:

  • Memory foam pillows (spot clean only)

Washing Method (for washable pillows)

You’ll need:

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • Optional: oxygen-based bleach (color-safe) for whitening
  • Dryer balls or clean tennis balls (for fluffing)

Steps:

  1. Remove pillowcases and covers.
  2. Check for stains and pre-treat them with a small amount of detergent.
  3. Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washer balanced.
  4. Use warm water and a gentle cycle (unless the label says otherwise).
  5. Add an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.

Drying is the most important step

  • Dry pillows completely to prevent mildew.
  • Use a low or medium heat setting if allowed.
  • Add dryer balls to help restore fluffiness.
  • Stop occasionally to fluff and check for moisture.
