How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows So They Look Fresh and Smell Clean 🛏️✨
Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. Many pillows can be washed, but always check the care label first.
Step 1: Check the pillow type
✅ Usually washable:
- Polyester-filled pillows
- Many down and feather pillows (check the label)
⚠️ Usually not machine washable:
- Memory foam pillows (spot clean only)
Washing Method (for washable pillows)
You’ll need:
- Mild laundry detergent
- Optional: oxygen-based bleach (color-safe) for whitening
- Dryer balls or clean tennis balls (for fluffing)
Steps:
- Remove pillowcases and covers.
- Check for stains and pre-treat them with a small amount of detergent.
- Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washer balanced.
- Use warm water and a gentle cycle (unless the label says otherwise).
- Add an extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.
Drying is the most important step
- Dry pillows completely to prevent mildew.
- Use a low or medium heat setting if allowed.
- Add dryer balls to help restore fluffiness.
- Stop occasionally to fluff and check for moisture.
