How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

“Inner ear crystals” usually refers to tiny calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) that have moved out of place in the inner ear. When they shift into the balance canals, they can cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)—brief episodes of spinning dizziness triggered by head movements (such as rolling over in bed, looking up, or bending down).

The main way to treat BPPV is repositioning maneuvers, not medicines:

1. Epley maneuver (commonly used)

This series of head and body positions helps move the crystals back where they belong. It is often effective, sometimes after one or more attempts. The correct side matters (right vs. left ear), so a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and teach the safest technique.

2. Brandt–Daroff exercises

These are repeated sitting-and-lying movements that some people use at home to help symptoms improve over time. They may be useful when the affected side is unclear or when guided by a healthcare professional.

Helpful steps during recovery

  • Move your head slowly when changing positions.
  • Sit on the edge of the bed before standing up.
  • Avoid driving or risky activities during active vertigo episodes.
  • Stay hydrated and get adequate sleep.
