There is no single “normal” blood pressure number for every age. Blood pressure targets are generally based more on overall health, medical conditions, and individual risk than age alone. However, these are common adult ranges used as a guide:
| Age group | Typical healthy blood pressure range (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 18–39 years | Around 90/60 to under 120/80 mmHg |
| 40–59 years | Around 90/60 to under 120/80 mmHg |
| 60+ years | Often still targeted around under 120/80 mmHg, but goals may be individualized |
Blood pressure categories for adults:
- Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 120–129 and less than 80
- High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 or 80–89
- High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140 or higher or 90 or higher
- Hypertensive crisis: 180/120 or higher (especially with symptoms—seek urgent medical care)
A single reading does not always tell the full story. Blood pressure can change with stress, activity, pain, caffeine, medications, and the time of day.
