Everyone has made this mistake. What is the normal bl00d pressure for each age?

Normal Blood Pressure by Age: What’s Healthy?

A common mistake is thinking that blood pressure should rise a lot as you get older. While blood pressure patterns can change with age, there is no single “normal” number for each age group. For most adults, a healthy target is generally around:

  • Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80 mmHg
  • High blood pressure (hypertension): 130/80 mmHg or higher (depending on repeated readings and medical guidelines)

Typical Blood Pressure Ranges by Age (General Guide)

Age group Often considered a healthy range
Children & teens Varies widely by age, height, and sex
18–39 years Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
40–59 years Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg (individual targets may vary)
60+ years Many adults aim for below 130–140 / 80–90 mmHg depending on health status

Remember:

  • A single high reading does not diagnose hypertension. Blood pressure changes with stress, activity, caffeine, pain, and time of day.
  • Very low blood pressure can also be a concern if it causes dizziness, fainting, or weakness.
  • Older adults, people with diabetes, kidney disease, or heart conditions may have personalized blood pressure goals.

For the most accurate reading:

  • Rest quietly for about 5 minutes before measuring.
  • Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
  • Take multiple readings on different days.

If you tell me your age and your blood pressure reading (for example, 145/90), I can help explain what it means.
