Magnesium Supplements: When to Be Careful With Certain Medications

The claim “Never use magnesium if you are taking certain medications” is too broad. Magnesium supplements are safe for many people, but they can interfere with the absorption of some medicines or require extra caution in certain health conditions.

Medications that may interact with magnesium

1. Certain antibiotics

Examples:

  • Tetracyclines (such as doxycycline)
  • Fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin)

Why it matters: Magnesium can bind to these medicines in the digestive tract and reduce how much of the antibiotic your body absorbs.

2. Thyroid hormone medication

Example:

  • Levothyroxine

Why it matters: Magnesium may reduce absorption. Many people are advised to separate magnesium and thyroid medication by several hours.

3. Osteoporosis medications

Examples:

  • Alendronate
  • Risedronate

Why it matters: Magnesium and other minerals can interfere with absorption.

4. Certain heart and blood pressure medicines

Some combinations may require monitoring, especially if kidney function is reduced or potassium/magnesium levels are being managed.

5. Diuretics (“water pills”)

Examples:

  • Furosemide
  • Hydrochlorothiazide

Why it matters: Some diuretics can change magnesium levels in the body.

6. Kidney disease

People with reduced kidney function should be cautious because the kidneys remove excess magnesium. Too much magnesium can build up and cause problems
