Baking soda is a useful household cleaner because it is a mild abrasive and can help lift grease, especially when combined with warm water and dish soap. However, claims that it is “the only way” to remove grease are exaggerated.
Simple Baking Soda Degreasing Paste
Ingredients:
- ½ cup baking soda
- 2–3 tablespoons warm water
- A few drops of dish soap (optional, for greasy surfaces)
Directions:
- Mix the ingredients into a thick paste.
- Apply it to greasy areas.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
- Gently scrub with a sponge or soft brush.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry.
Where It Works Well
- Stove tops
- Oven doors (avoid self-cleaning oven interiors unless the manufacturer recommends it)
- Range hoods and filters
- Kitchen countertops (if compatible with the material)
- Pots and pans with baked-on grease
- Sink surfaces
Use Caution On
- Natural stone (such as marble or granite), as repeated scrubbing can dull the finish.
- Aluminum, which may become scratched or discolored.
- Delicate painted or polished surfaces.
For very heavy grease buildup, a commercial kitchen degreaser designed for the surface may work better than baking soda alone. Always test any cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first.
