Scratches on Glasses: Can a Simple Trick Make Them Disappear?
You may see online tips claiming that toothpaste, baking soda, or other household items can instantly remove scratches from eyeglass lenses. Unfortunately, this is usually not true.
Most eyeglass lenses are made from plastic materials with protective coatings (such as anti-reflective or scratch-resistant layers). Scratches are physical damage to the lens surface, and rubbing them with abrasive substances usually does not remove the scratch—it may simply polish away coatings unevenly and make vision worse.
What You Can Do Instead
1. Clean Lenses Properly
Sometimes what looks like a scratch is actually dirt or a coating mark.
- Rinse lenses with clean water.
- Use a microfiber cloth.
- Use eyeglass lens cleaner (not paper towels or clothing).
2. Check Whether the Scratch Is on the Coating
If the lens has a damaged coating, an optician may be able to advise whether the lenses can be repaired or need replacement.
3. Replace Severely Scratched Lenses
Deep scratches can:
- Distort vision
- Cause glare
- Become distracting while driving or reading
Replacing lenses is often the safest solution.
How to Prevent Future Scratches
- Keep glasses in a hard protective case.
- Store them with lenses facing upward.
- Avoid wiping lenses when they are dry and dusty.
- Use a microfiber cloth instead of tissues or clothing.
- Avoid harsh household cleaners.
