3 Exercises to Relieve Sciatica Leg Pain: Practical and Effective

If you’re looking for practical exercises for sciatica (pain traveling from the lower back/buttock into the leg), gentle movement is generally preferable to prolonged bed rest. There isn’t one exercise that works for everyone, so choose movements that don’t significantly worsen your leg symptoms. (nhs.uk)

3 gentle options

1. Walking 🚶
Start with a short, comfortable walk—even 5–10 minutes—and gradually increase the duration as tolerated. Staying active can support recovery. (nhs.uk)

2. Gentle buttock stretch
Lie on your back with your knees bent. Bring one leg across the opposite thigh, then gently draw the supporting leg toward your chest. Hold for about 15–20 seconds, then switch sides. (nhs.uk)

3. Gentle hamstring stretch
Lie on your back with one knee bent and the other leg raised. Hold behind the raised thigh or below the knee and gently straighten/bring the leg toward you without forcing it. Hold for 15–20 seconds, then switch sides. (nhs.uk)

Important: Stop an exercise if it clearly makes your leg pain, numbness, or weakness worse. If you develop numbness around the genitals/bottom, difficulty controlling or passing urine or stool, severe/worsening weakness in both legs, or sciatica on both sides, seek emergency medical care. (nhs.uk)

If your sciatica has lasted several weeks, is worsening, or is interfering with normal activities, a doctor or physiotherapist can assess the cause and tailor exercises to you. (nhs.uk)
