How to Make a Homemade Herbicide
If you want a simple way to control small weeds, a household vinegar-based spray can work as a contact herbicide. It mainly damages the leaves it touches, so established weeds may grow back from their roots.
Simple Recipe
- 1 liter of household white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap
Mix carefully in a spray bottle and apply directly to the leaves of unwanted weeds on a dry, sunny day.
For Better Results
Spray only the weeds you want to remove. Keep the mixture away from flowers, vegetables, grass, and other plants you want to keep. Avoid windy conditions because the spray can drift.
Important: Homemade herbicides are not automatically harmless. Vinegar can damage desirable plants and soil life, and stronger agricultural vinegar products can cause skin and eye injuries.
For deep-rooted or persistent weeds, removing the roots or using a properly labeled commercial herbicide may be more effective.
Simple, targeted treatment is usually better than trying to kill everything in the garden.
