That headline is misleading. A Peace lily cannot be “watered with something instead of water” and then live indefinitely. Like all plants, it needs water to survive.
Many social media posts suggest watering peace lilies with things like:
- Coffee
- Milk
- Banana-peel water
- Rice water
- Sugary solutions
These are often promoted as miracle fertilizers, but they can cause problems such as:
- Mold growth
- Foul odors
- Fungus gnats and other pests
- Salt buildup in the soil
- Root damage
What actually helps a peace lily thrive?
1. Consistent watering
Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry. Peace lilies are famous for drooping when thirsty and usually perk up after watering.
2. Bright, indirect light
They prefer bright filtered light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
3. Occasional fertilizer
Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength every month or two during the growing season.
4. Good drainage
A pot with drainage holes helps prevent root rot.
5. Moderate humidity
Peace lilies generally appreciate average indoor humidity and slightly higher humidity if possible.
A common “hack” that can help
Diluted rice water or compost tea may provide small amounts of nutrients, but they should be used only occasionally and not as a replacement for water.
