Have You Found a Pile of Winged Bugs and Loose Wings Near Your Front Door?
Waking up to dozens of tiny winged insects or scattered wings near your front door can be alarming. At first glance, they often look like flying ants, but appearances can be deceiving.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that these insects may actually be termite swarmers. These winged termites emerge from mature colonies during certain times of the year to start new colonies. After landing, they quickly shed their wings, often leaving behind small piles of discarded wings around doors, windows, and light sources.
One of the easiest ways to tell the difference is by looking at their bodies. Flying ants have a narrow, pinched waist and bent antennae, while termite swarmers have a thicker, straighter body with straight antennae. Their wings are also different—termite swarmers have four wings of equal size, whereas flying ants have larger front wings and smaller rear wings.
