The 5 best vitamins for your eyes

👁️ The 5 Best Vitamins and Nutrients for Eye Health

There isn’t one vitamin that can prevent every eye disease. But several nutrients are important for normal vision, and some have been studied extensively for age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

1. 🥕 Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for normal vision, particularly seeing in low light, and helps maintain the surface of the eye. A severe deficiency can cause serious vision problems. (Office of Dietary Supplements)

Good sources include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, eggs, and dairy products.

2. 🍊 Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables. It’s one of the nutrients used in the AREDS/AREDS2 formulation, which can slow progression of intermediate AMD in appropriate patients. (National Eye Institute)

3. 🌰 Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another antioxidant included in the AREDS formulation. However, the high doses used for AMD are not ordinary multivitamin doses and shouldn’t be taken without medical guidance. (National Eye Institute)

4. 🥬 Lutein

Lutein is a carotenoid concentrated in the retina. It’s found in foods such as dark leafy greens, broccoli, and peas. AREDS2 found that lutein can be used instead of beta-carotene in the AMD supplement formula. (National Eye Institute)

5. 🌽 Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin works alongside lutein in the retina. Both are components of the AREDS2 supplement for people with appropriate stages of AMD. (National Eye Institute)

⚠️ Don’t assume more is better

AREDS2 supplements contain high doses of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin. They are specifically intended for certain people with AMD—not as a general eye-health supplement for everyone. They don’t prevent AMD from developing in people who don’t have it. (National Eye Institute)

Also, excessive vitamin A from supplements can be harmful. (Office of Dietary Supplements)

Bottom line: A diet rich in colorful vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, nuts, and other nutrient-dense foods is a good foundation for eye health. If you have AMD, ask your eye doctor whether an AREDS2 supplement is appropriate rather than choosing a high-dose supplement yourself.
