If you’ve found a silverfish in your home, don’t panic. Seeing one doesn’t necessarily mean your house is dirty or infested. Silverfish are harmless to people, but they can indicate excess moisture and may damage paper, books, wallpaper, fabrics, or stored food products.
🐛 What finding silverfish can mean
Check for moisture
Silverfish prefer humid, dark places such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and areas around leaking pipes.
Improve ventilation
Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, repair leaks, and consider a dehumidifier if the area stays damp.
Seal entry points
Check cracks around baseboards, windows, doors, and pipes and seal gaps where insects may enter.
Reduce clutter
Cardboard boxes, old papers, books, and other undisturbed materials can provide hiding places and food.
Monitor for more insects
An occasional silverfish isn’t usually a major concern. Repeated sightings, shed skins, or damage to paper and fabrics may indicate a larger population.
Don’t automatically reach for insecticide. Fixing moisture and removing hiding places is often the most useful first step.
If you’re seeing lots of silverfish, especially during the daytime, or you’re finding them in multiple rooms, professional pest-control advice may be worthwhile.
