No more bland watermelons! Here’s a sure-fire visual guide to finding the sweetest fruit at the market.

🍉 No visual trick can guarantee the sweetest watermelon, but a few signs can improve your odds:

Large creamy-yellow field spot — one of the better clues that the melon ripened on the ground. A white spot may indicate less maturity.
Heavy for its size — suggests it contains plenty of water.
Dull, not glossy, rind — often associated with a mature melon.
Uniform, symmetrical shape — avoid melons with major dents or irregular soft areas.
Dry, brownish stem — can be a useful maturity clue if the stem is still attached.
Don’t rely on tapping alone — the “hollow sound” test isn’t a dependable measure of sweetness.
Don’t assume webbing guarantees sweetness — brown web-like markings may reflect pollination, but they aren’t a reliable sugar test.
The quick market rule

Heavy + creamy-yellow field spot + mature-looking rind + no soft/damaged areas is a sensible combination.

And remember: variety and growing conditions have a major influence on sweetness, so even a perfect-looking watermelon isn’t guaranteed to be sweet.
