If you’re referring to the sixth sign—unexplained weight loss—it deserves attention, but it isn’t specific to diabetes.
Unintentional weight loss can occur when blood glucose is persistently high because the body can’t use glucose effectively and begins breaking down fat and muscle for energy. It can also have many other causes, so it shouldn’t automatically be attributed to diabetes.
If someone is losing weight without trying, particularly along with increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision, they should arrange a medical evaluation and blood-glucose testing. If the weight loss is rapid and accompanied by vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, or difficulty breathing, urgent medical attention is warranted.
