Fibromyalgia: Nighttime Symptoms to Watch For
Fibromyalgia can make nighttime especially difficult. The condition is associated with widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and cognitive difficulties, and symptoms can fluctuate over time.
Common nighttime problems include:
Widespread aching or burning pain that makes it difficult to get comfortable.
Restless or unrefreshing sleep, even after spending enough time in bed.
Muscle stiffness, particularly when changing position or getting out of bed.
Increased sensitivity to touch or pressure, which can make lying in one position uncomfortable.
Morning fatigue and “brain fog” after a poor night’s sleep.
When should you be careful?
Don’t automatically attribute new or dramatically different nighttime symptoms to fibromyalgia. Seek medical advice if you develop symptoms such as unexplained fever, significant swelling, progressive weakness, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or neurological changes.
There is no single nighttime symptom that proves someone has fibromyalgia. Diagnosis requires a healthcare professional to consider the overall pattern of symptoms and rule out other conditions.
