If your HANDS fall asleep it’s a clear sign that you have can… see mo

The claim “If your hands fall asleep, it’s a clear sign that you have…” is usually misleading. Tingling, numbness, or the sensation that your hands have “fallen asleep” can have many causes, and it is not a clear sign of any one condition.

Common causes include:

  • Pressure on a nerve from sleeping or sitting in an awkward position
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Nerve compression in the neck
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Diabetes
  • Poor circulation (less commonly the cause of brief hand numbness)

When it’s usually not a concern

If the sensation:

  • Happens occasionally
  • Occurs after leaning on your arm or sleeping in a certain position
  • Resolves within a few minutes

it’s often due to temporary nerve compression.

When to see a doctor

You should seek medical evaluation if:

  • The numbness happens frequently
  • It is getting worse
  • You have weakness, loss of grip strength, or dropping objects
  • Symptoms affect one side of the body suddenly
  • You have other symptoms such as facial drooping, speech difficulty, or severe dizziness (which may indicate a medical emergency)
