The claim “If your hands fall asleep, it’s a clear sign that you have…” is usually misleading. Tingling, numbness, or the sensation that your hands have “fallen asleep” can have many causes, and it is not a clear sign of any one condition.
Common causes include:
- Pressure on a nerve from sleeping or sitting in an awkward position
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Nerve compression in the neck
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin B12 deficiency
- Diabetes
- Poor circulation (less commonly the cause of brief hand numbness)
When it’s usually not a concern
If the sensation:
- Happens occasionally
- Occurs after leaning on your arm or sleeping in a certain position
- Resolves within a few minutes
it’s often due to temporary nerve compression.
When to see a doctor
You should seek medical evaluation if:
- The numbness happens frequently
- It is getting worse
- You have weakness, loss of grip strength, or dropping objects
- Symptoms affect one side of the body suddenly
- You have other symptoms such as facial drooping, speech difficulty, or severe dizziness (which may indicate a medical emergency)
