A Month Before a Heart Attack, Your Body May Warn You — 6 Signs to Take Seriously

A heart attack does not always happen without warning. Some people experience symptoms in the days or weeks before an event, while others may have little or no warning. Recognizing possible warning signs and seeking medical help early can save lives.

Here are 6 signs that should not be ignored:

1. Unusual Chest Discomfort

Chest pressure, squeezing, heaviness, tightness, or burning can be a warning sign. It may come and go and may not always feel like severe pain.

2. Shortness of Breath

Feeling unusually out of breath during normal activities—or even while resting—can occur when the heart is struggling to pump effectively.

3. Unexplained Fatigue

Extreme tiredness, reduced stamina, or feeling exhausted despite normal rest may occur, especially in some women and older adults.

4. Pain or Discomfort in Other Areas

Heart-related discomfort may spread beyond the chest, including:

  • Arm (especially the left arm)
  • Shoulder
  • Neck
  • Jaw
  • Back
  • Upper stomach area

5. Dizziness, Lightheadedness, or Fainting

A drop in blood flow or abnormal heart rhythms can cause feeling faint or unsteady.

6. Sweating, Nausea, or a Feeling of Unease

Cold sweating, nausea, vomiting, or a sudden feeling that something is seriously wrong can sometimes occur with heart problems.

When to Get Emergency Help

Call emergency services immediately if someone has:

  • Chest pressure or discomfort lasting more than a few minutes
  • Symptoms that return or worsen
  • Trouble breathing
