Claims that an “ancestral herbal remedy” can remove all mucus from the nose, throat, and lungs in just 2 days are usually exaggerated. No herbal drink or remedy has been proven to rapidly clear mucus from the entire respiratory system or cure infections. However, some traditional remedies may help soothe symptoms and make mucus easier to clear.
Ways to support mucus relief
1. Warm fluids
- Warm water, soups, and herbal teas can help keep mucus thinner and easier to move.
- Honey in warm tea may soothe a sore throat (do not give honey to children under 1 year).
2. Steam and humidity
- A humidifier or a warm shower may help relieve nasal dryness and congestion.
- Avoid very hot steam that can burn the skin or airways.
3. Saline nasal rinse or spray
- Saline can help loosen and wash away mucus from the nose.
- Use sterile/distilled water or properly prepared water for nasal rinses.
4. Hydration and rest
- Adequate fluids and sleep support the body’s normal recovery processes.
When to get medical advice
Seek medical care if mucus is accompanied by:
- Trouble breathing, chest pain, or wheezing
- Coughing up blood
- High or persistent fever
- Symptoms lasting more than about 10 days or getting worse after improving
- Thick mucus with significant illness or in people with chronic lung conditions
Herbal remedies can be part of comfort care, but they should not replace evaluation or treatment when there are signs of a more serious respiratory problem.
